Well, I should have know that I was going to jinx myself! "I don't have any excuses not to write". Thanks, past-me.
The hurricane this week knocked out power for a huge percentage of the state. We were totally blindsided - all it was by the time it hit us was wind, so what was the big deal? Had no power or internet since afternoon on Tuesday. Let me tell you, my hobbies are: writing (in stories that are all digitized), playing video games, watching TV, and designing my own 2D RPG. None of that translates well to be done by candlelight!!
First night we had to slip under a fallen tree to get off of our road (the other end was blocked by a downed wire) to even be able to get something to eat. And then 3/4 of the restaurants were closed because of their own outages. We foolishly thought that by the time we got up the next day, we'd have power back. Nah. So took a day out of work, did damage control on the food in the fridge. Some of it got salvaged into a cooler with ice, but that was pretty much just condiments. Nothing substantial.
Still Thursday had no power, so both of us had to drive in to work. Thankfully the facility I was assigned to for the day was pretty dead; I sat at my old desk on the dark production floor and didn't see people until lunchtime. Daniel's office was a lot busier since many of them had no power as well.
Never was I so happy as when almost without warning last night the lights kicked back on. The only indication beforehand that we might be lucking out was when a truck parked outside the house for a few minutes with its lights on. We stared at it for a bit, laughed about how absolutely stupid we felt for doing so, and joked that the lights would come back exactly then to reveal us standing there staring. It wasn't quite then that power came back - maybe 20 minutes later?
Course, we still need to now buy a whole fridge and freezer of food again, never mind the $$$ spent on buying takeout because we couldn't cook. Gah.
I gotta get back in the saddle tomorrow and work on some writing. Rule 63 exchange is coming up fast, and I need to get my ass in gear.
